Bluehost review: What is Bluehost?

Founded in 2003, Bluehost is a web hosting company that provides hosting services for individuals and businesses. Since its creation, Bluehost has grown to become one of the leading hosting providers on the internet today.

This is in part thanks to the wide range of hosting solutions offered by Bluehost. These include shared hosting, virtual private servers (VPS), dedicated servers, and managed WordPress hosting. In fact, Bluehost’s most notable feature might just be that it is officially recommended by WordPress, which is itself one of the biggest content management systems (CMS) used by travel bloggers.

Key elements of Bluehost

The recommendation of WordPress ensures seamless integration and optimized performance for all WordPress sites hosted on Bluehost. What’s more, Bluehost has a reputation for prioritizing performance through the application of advanced technologies.

For example, they use solid-state drives (SSDs) for storage, which results in faster data retrieval and improved website loading times. They also employ NginX servers and PHP 7.4, both known for their efficiency in handling web requests and processing dynamic content.

In terms of security, Bluehost offers features like free SSL certificates, Sitelock security, and Codeguard backups to protect websites from threats, malware, and unauthorized access. This focus on security ensures the safety and integrity of users’ data and provides peace of mind.

Bluehost provides 24/7 customer support through various channels, including phone, chat, and a ticketing system. Their support team is known for their responsiveness and knowledge, helping users with any hosting-related issues or inquiries.

Bluehost review: How does Bluehost work?

Bluehost is designed to be highly versatile, efficient, and easy to use. When you sign up with Bluehost, you gain access to their platform and all the resources you need to create and manage your website.

To get started, you need to choose a hosting plan that suits your needs. Bluehost offers various options, including the aforementioned shared hosting, virtual private servers (VPS), and dedicated servers. Each plan has different features and resources to accommodate different levels of website traffic and complexity. That makes it ideal both for established bloggers with large audiences and newer bloggers who are just starting to build a following.

Once you’ve selected a plan, Bluehost provides you with a domain name, the address that people use to access your website. You can either register a new domain or transfer an existing one to Bluehost. Remember to choose your travel blogger name wisely before buying your domain.

After setting up your domain, you can begin building your website using Bluehost’s website builder or by installing popular content management systems like WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal. These tools offer customizable templates and themes, allowing you to design your site according to your preferences.

Bluehost also offers various add-on services, such as email hosting, domain privacy, and SSL certificates to enhance the security and functionality of your website. Additionally, they provide tools for managing your email accounts, databases, and file storage.

Once your website is live, Bluehost handles the behind-the-scenes technical aspects, such as server maintenance, security updates, and backups. This ensures that your site remains accessible and protected from potential threats. After that, you’re ready to start blogging. It’s just that easy!

Bluehost review: How much does Bluehost cost?

One of the biggest things that distinguishes Bluehost from its competitors is its value for money. Simply put, the company offers premium features, security, services, and reliability at budget-host prices. That makes it very easy to get the performance you need, whether you enjoy an established travel blogger’s salary or have limited access to funds. Best of all, Bluehost offers a range of different tiers and pricing plans, meaning that you pay for only what you need.

Bluehost offers flexible pricing options with a 12-month commitment.

Bluehost pricing is split up into four different tiers: Basic, Plus, Choice Plus, and Pro. Each tier is also offered in either 12-month or 36-month installments, with the latter providing an extra discount in exchange for a longer commitment. In the following Bluehost review sections, I’ll break down exactly how much each tier costs and what features they come with.  If you plan to sign up after reading my Bluehost review, I recommend using this link to save 60% on web hosting!

Bloggers can save even more money on Bluehost with a 36-month commitment.

Basic

At the time of this writing, new customers who sign up for Bluehost’s “Basic” plan will pay $2.95 a month for a 12-month period or $4.95 a month for a 36-month period. This is a special promotional price specifically for new clients. After the first 12-month or 36-month period, your plan will auto-renew at the regular rate. This would be either $10.99 a month for 12 months or $9.99 a month for 36 months.

The Basic plan is designed for beginners and/or anyone who only needs hosting for one website. One free year of domain ownership, one free year of  SSL, free CDN, 10GB of SSD storage, free malware scanning, access to the free WordPress Migration Tool, and the free version of Yoast SEO.

Up to 15,000 visitors can access your site monthly, but you are limited to hosting just one site.

Plus

At the time of this writing, new customers who sign up for Bluehost’s “Plus” plan will pay $5.45 a month for a 12-month period or $7.45 a month for a 36-month period. Again, this is a special promotional price specifically for new clients. After the first 12-month or 36-month period, your plan will auto-renew at the regular rate: $14.99 a month for 12 months or $13.99 a month for 36 months.

The Plus plan is a good choice for users who need hosting services for multiple sites, but who otherwise don’t need access to the more advanced features found in higher tiers. The Plus plan offers all the same features as the Basic plan, but increases SSD storage to 20GB and includes free SSL for the lifetime of the account, not just the first year. It also includes access to Bluehost’s staging environment and email marketing features.

Up to 50,000 visitors can access your site monthly, and you can host an unlimited number of sites.

Choice Plus

At the time of this writing, new customers who sign up for Bluehost’s “Choice Plus” plan will pay $5.45 a month for a 12-month period or $7.45 a month for a 36-month period. It’s worth noting that this is the same introductory price for the Plus plan. However, once again, this is a special promotional price specifically for new clients. After the first 12-month or 36-month period, your plan will auto-renew at the regular rate: $19.99 a month for 12 months or $18.99 a month for 36 months.

The Choice Plus plan is for users who need hosting services for multiple sites, and who also want access to more advanced privacy and security features. The Choice Plus plan offers all the same features as the Plus plan, but increases SSD storage to 40GB. More importantly, it adds a free year of access to Bluehost’s daily website backup features. Other features include domain privacy, multi-site management, seamless updates, performance insights, a staging site, plugins collections, and client invoicing.

Up to 200,000 visitors can access your sites monthly, and you can host an unlimited number of sites.

Pro

At the time of this writing, new customers who sign up for Bluehost’s “Pro” plan will pay $13.95 a month for a 12-month period or $18.95 a month for a 36-month period. Again, this is a special promotional price specifically for new clients. After the first 12-month or 36-month period, your plan will auto-renew at the regular rate: $28.99 a month for 12 months or $29.99 a month for 36 months.

The Pro plan is the highest Bluehost tier, making it ideal for users with multiple sites who need even more speed and processing power. The Pro plan offers all the same features as the Choice Plan plan, but increases SSD storage to 100GB and includes free daily website backs for the lifetime of the account, not just the first year.

Up to 400,000 visitors can access your sites monthly, and you can host an unlimited number of sites.

Bluehost review: Cons of using Bluehost

As good as Bluehost is, it’s not perfect for everyone (nothing is, after all). As a counterpoint to the positives aspects outlined above, here are some of the negatives of using Bluehost:

  • The basic shared hosting plan has some limitations, such as a cap on the number of websites and storage space.
  • While Bluehost offers a website builder, it may not be as feature-rich or customizable as other dedicated website builder platforms.
  • The backup feature is available, but it may not be as user-friendly or comprehensive as some users would prefer.
  • Bluehost’s server response times could be improved in certain instances, particularly during peak traffic periods.
  • While customer support is available 24/7, some users have reported occasional delays or less satisfactory experiences with the support team.
  • Advanced users may find limitations in terms of server configurations and customization options, as Bluehost focuses on user-friendly solutions.
  • Bluehost’s refund policy has some restrictions and conditions, and it may not be as straightforward or flexible as some other hosting providers.
  • The control panel interface may feel dated when compared to some newer hosting platforms.

Bluehost review: How does it compare to other hosting providers?

When comparing Bluehost to other hosting services, one thing that immediately stands out is that most competitors are either more expensive but have a few more bells and whistles, or they’re less expensive without offering the same reliability or features. In that sense, Bluehost is in “the Goldilocks zone.” Not too hot, not too cold. Just right.

This balance will be especially attractive to first-time bloggers. The platform’s user-friendly interface simplifies the process of setting up and managing a website.  Beginners can make use of Bluehost’s step-by-step guidance to help them navigate the hosting process.

At the same time, more experienced users will find that “simplified” does not translate to “dumbed down.” Indeed, Bluehost’s suite of options is as impressive as it is flexible, with various hosting plans tailored to different needs. These include shared hosting for smaller websites, but also dedicated servers for high-traffic or resource-intensive projects.

Equally robust are Bluehost’s superior security features. The company provides free SSL certificates to encrypt data transmitted between your website and users, and also implements measures to protect against common threats like malware and hacking attempts.

The fact that Bluehost does all this (and more) at such a competitive price is arguably the biggest reason to choose them over other providers. You simply won’t find a better value for money anywhere else. The amount of professional-grade hosting, performance, and security features included with Bluehost is astounding given its low subscription price.

It ranks high on the list of the best and most affordably priced hosting providers, with most aggregator sites having Bluehost review scores at around 4.7-4.9 out of 5

In fact, many of my favorite travel bloggers credit Bluehost with helping them find their way during their journey into the digital realm. Bluehost’s affordable hosting solutions have played a vital role in making their blogging aspirations a reality, particularly during those early stages when financial resources were limited.

On a personal note, I can vividly recall the challenges I faced when starting my blog with a limited budget. Bluehost offers a variety of hosting options to cater to different website needs and budgets. Here are the main types of hosting provided by Bluehost:

With shared hosting, multiple websites share server resources, including CPU, RAM, and disk space. Bluehost’s shared hosting plans come with features like one-click WordPress installation, unmetered bandwidth, and a free domain name.

These plans provide enhanced performance, automatic WordPress updates, advanced security features, and dedicated WordPress support.

What is the uptime guarantee for Bluehost?

Bluehost offers an uptime guarantee for its hosting services, ensuring that customers’ websites are accessible to visitors without interruptions. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Bluehost provides an uptime guarantee of 99.9%.

The uptime guarantee signifies that Bluehost strives to keep customers’ websites up and running 99.9% of the time. This means that they aim to minimize any unplanned downtime or server issues that could result in website inaccessibility. It’s important to note that no hosting provider can guarantee 100% uptime, as occasional maintenance, unforeseen circumstances, or factors beyond their control may cause brief periods of downtime.

In the event that Bluehost fails to meet the 99.9% uptime guarantee in a given month, they have a policy in place to compensate customers. The compensation typically involves a credit or refund for a portion of the customer’s hosting fees, reflecting the extent of the downtime experienced.

To ensure uptime and maintain reliable hosting services, Bluehost employs various measures, such as redundant power supply, backup systems, server monitoring, and proactive maintenance. They also have a team of technical experts available 24/7 to address any issues promptly and efficiently.

It’s worth mentioning that specific details regarding the uptime guarantee and compensation policy may be subject to change, so it’s recommended to refer to Bluehost’s official website or contact their customer support for the most up-to-date information regarding their uptime guarantee.
